PERSONAL MEAL PLAN
One size doesn't fit all. MyPyramid Plan from the USDA offers meals with the foods and amounts that are right for your height, weight. etc.. Click on the Pyramid. It's GREAT information, including tips about reading food labels and selections among the five food groups and has   guidelines to meal portions

In general, the nutritionists and physicians are currently stressing low carbohydrate, lean protein, and proper fatty acid diets.  The two most popular of these are the South Beach Diet and Atkins Diet.  Historically, the Atkins diet preceded the South Beach diet.

The South Beach allows more freedom in carbohydrate selection, and defines more specifics about fat intake.  The Atkins diet emphasizes carbohydrate intake restriction and is more liberal with fat intake.   According to most of our patients who have been on both the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet, the latter appears to be easier to read and follow, providing more menus and recipes, thus making it easier to maintain long-term lifestyle changes.

In our region, many people are also inquiring about Macrobiotic diets, which are organic and vegetarian in nature.  The Macrobiotic Diet by definition is,
f
rom an intake standpoint,  a low-fat, high-fiber diet of whole grains, vegetables, sea algae, and seeds. Macrobiotics is a greater concept. It is based on an ancient Far-Eastern philosophy of holistic living. We provide links through the Wikipedia as to specifics.

When asked to create our own diet plan, we would demand the following:

*FDA and/or USDA standards for individual age and medical requirements based on the individual’s condition, such as diabetes, digestive disorders, neurological condition, etc…

*We agree strongly that higher protein, lower carbohydrate and restricted fatty acid selections promote the most successful weight loss.

*We recommend daily nutritional supplements as an adjunct if your diet does not nutritionally meet FDA and USDA requirements.  Nonetheless, we recognize that patients who compliment their diet plan clearly maintain their weight and health to a greater extent.  We cannot guarantee that this comes from the supplements alone, but in conjunction with a proper diet are clearly beneficial and health preservative, which far too many Americans have forgotten.

*At a minimum an awareness of FDA warnings about specific supplement dangers, vitamin overdoses and the occasional specific food warnings based on isolated contamination should be observed at the following website:   (FDA warnings link goes here)

Incidentally, if we had the time, we could create a diet that combines the best of all the above mentioned nutritional plans.
